New Study from Italy: Verso Vision Reduced Hospital Falls by 79% and Fall Events by 57%

Falls in hospitals remain one of the most common and costly adverse events, particularly among older patients. They not only prolong hospital stays but also increase treatment costs, impact patients’ independence and well-being, and burden healthcare systems globally.A newly published peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Digital Health brings compelling evidence on how the AI-powered Verso Vision monitoring system can significantly reduce these incidents.

Real-World Evidence from Humanitas Gavazzeni Hospital

The study was conducted at Humanitas Gavazzeni Hospital in Bergamo, Italy, and included a total of 362 patients. Using a retrospective design, the study compared periods when patients were monitored with Verso Vision against those without.

The findings were striking:

  • Relative risk of falling decreased by 79% (IRR 0.21, p < 0.0001) in the monitored group.
  • The absolute number of fall incidents dropped by 57%, from 15 to 5 events, a critical metric for quantifying clinical and financial impact.

These numbers mean fewer patients are harmed, and hospitals can significantly reduce the costs associated with imaging, treatment, and extended stays.

Designed for Clinical Reality

The system is non-intrusive and privacy-safe, requiring no wearable devices. It integrates seamlessly into existing hospital workflows and nurse call systems. Importantly, the study also reported:

  • High staff satisfaction and ease of use after minimal training
  • Strong patient compliance and no privacy concerns

Why This Matters
According to multiple studies, hospital falls can increase treatment costs by thousands of euros per case. In some cases, falls extend hospital stays by over a week. A reduction of more than half in fall events, as seen in this study, can translate to more than million euros in avoided costs per year in medium-to-large hospitals.

Next Steps
Encouraged by these results, Humanitas Gavazzeni has already launched a 12-month prospective study to assess long-term clinical and economic outcomes.
